Engineering with LEGO(r) 

Jr. Robotics with Wedo 2.0

By using the latest LEGO WeDo 2.0 we will be combining programming and LEGO® building and make projects come to life with sensors and motors.  Students will be programming via LEGO’s drag and drop WeDo software and we will be using touch tablets so no typing necessary!  This is a fun way to get excited about robotics and programming.

Robo Olympics

This fun twist on the Olympics will have students challenged and thinking as they engineer “bots” in order to compete in different Olympic Games such as high jump, basketball, soccer, discus throw, and boxing. Concepts taught include compression springs, levers, gears and energy. Students will have a chance to earn a medal and receive prizes and awards on the final day!

Xtreme Vehicles!

Join us as we engineer extreme vehicles including rubber band and wind powered cars, and hill climbing motorized trucks!  Concepts taught include energy, chassis design, friction, gear ratios and basic electronics.  Challenges include the steep slope, longest distance, and slug car challenge.  In-class competition and prizes on the final day!

Life Science

HS - Biology LAB

A-G approved for those high school students seeking credit from a rigorous program.  Complete all your labs by taking these 2 sessions.  Each semester will cover 7-8 labs.  Main topics of study include using a compound microscope which will be used throughout the class to study cells and learn its various components (organelles and their functions), and processes (transportation, reproduction, and differentiation). DNA and genetics will be covered with attention given to natural selection and evolution. Finally, the interdependence of organisms will be addressed with a focus on ecosystems. Lecture will be accompanied by hands on labs throughout the course.

Earth Science

Astronomy and Geology 201

The Earth and Beyond!!! During the first half of this session, students will learn about Geology and explore rocks, minerals, soil, earthquakes, volcanoes and the history of our planet. During the second half we will dive into Astronomy and examine the movement of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars. Students will learn about the powerful forces involved in the formation of our galaxy and universe!

Life Science

Zoology

Is your child an animal lover?  Well so are we! This class explores hands on learning using Lifeliqe augmented reality software as well as hands-on activities.  Students will get to study a range of different animals from microscopic organisms using a microscope to our larger backyard friends using field guides.  Using augmented reality students will observe different animals and ask themselves “why” and “how” do these animals work and will be able to see the muscles, organs, and nervous system within the incredible range of animals Lifeliqe provides.  Students will be involved in hands-on labs, playing interactive games, doing experiments, growing bacteria, and dissecting a squid!

Physical Science

HS - Chemistry LAB

This lab is a full year course (30 weeks) and has been approved for A-G for those high school students seeking credit from a rigorous program.  The first lab sets the foundation for chemistry covering measurement, scientific tools and the SI system. Labs relating to specific elemental properties, including bonding will be conducted before moving onto reaction rates and kinds of reactions. Avogadro's Number will be used to convey and calculate the number of moles based on molar mass and molecular weight. Finally, labs relating to the various gas laws, pH (acids and bases), and specific heat and energy will wrap up the unit.

Chemistry Lab - Reactions

Explore hands-on fun and make things bubble, fizz, change color, react and grow. Students will learn how these processes occur in their everyday life. Basic concepts will include pH (acids and bases), capillary action, signs of a reaction (bubbles, heat, physical and chemical changes), the electromagnetic spectrum, polymers, and changes in states of matter.

Inventors LAB

Junkyard Wars 2

Get ready to go head to head in this competitive junkyard wars class!  Students will team up and complete 2 main projects in this class, something that flies and something that drives! Using old machines and toys students will be challenged with making something fly the furthest and teams will be retrofitting a Power Wheels vehicle to compete in various challenges! Basic experience with power tools recommended.  If students do not have experience, we will have weekend workshops and students can get their certification.  All participants must be approved by Mr.Shane!

Rapid Prototyping 2: Intermediate

Ready to get into more detailed projects in 3d printing and CNC milling?  Our two main projects will include making a Bluetooth speaker system and a mini remote control rock crawler vehicle.  (Remote, battery pack, and receiver are not take-home items.  Students will get to take home servo motors with their project.)  Experience with Fusion 360 CAD program is required.  If you have no prior experience with Fusion 360, you can download it for free and practice the program before taking the class.

Rapid Prototyping1: 3D Printing Basics

Learn about the world of 3D printing and turn your ideas into a reality!  Students will learn the basics of Fusion 360(CAD) program and learn the 3D printing process.  Different design challenges will be given out, such as designing a fidget spinner and a custom flash drive case!  80% of this class will be learning how to use Fusion 360 as the design process is a vital component of 3D printing.

Harry Potter Makers Lab

Do you belong to Gryffindor, Slytherine, or??? Join us for this creative, scientific, and magical class and create your house crest, make your custom wand, learn how to write and cast spells, and more! Students will learn things such as sound frequency and botany through the mandrake plant and how invisible ink works. Dissect some owl pellets and see what it has been eating, learn about the philosopher’s stone through use of alchemy, chemistry through potion making, and create your own dragon!

Mechanical Engineering: Propulsion

Join us in this class as we learn about the force that makes mechanical things move, propulsion! Students will design, build and test machines such as a fanboat, air powered rockets and planes.  Will your fanboat be the fastest in a head to head race?!

Wood Shop Basics

Good ol' wood shop!  Learn the basics of wood shop and how to use the tools that shape, join, cut and form projects made of wood. Students will learn to use tools such as a band-saw, drill press, sanders and more to create various projects such as a bird house or planter and a catapult!

Wood Shop & Metal Work : Intermediate

Take your wood working skills to the next level!  This intermediate class will cover wood finishing techniques such as routing, sanding, painting and staining.  Metal work will include turning aluminum on a lathe.  Final project will be designing and racing a pinewood derby car!  Students must be approved by Mr.Shane!

Science with a Twist!

Forensics

Who did it? How did it happen? Forensics is the application of science to solving crimes, and YOU are the forensic scientist. There’s no such thing as getting away without a trace because there’s always evidence left behind! This course will present an overview of forensic principles. Collect evidence and process hair samples, fingerprints, blood and more to solve the case!

S'Math

Where Science and Math collide! Learn science through hands on experiments with an emphasis on math. Discover if you’re more left‐brained or right‐brained with a class on optical illusions; Have fun learning about angles creating a mini skate park with half pipes and quarter pipes; Other topics include concepts from chemistry, electromagnetic spectrum, energy, 2D and 3D graphing, fractions, decimals & place value and more.

Adobe Illustrator 101

Learn one of the foundational programs in the digital arts world!  Need a new family crest or logo for your multi national billion dollar corporation? Join us as we learn the basics of good logo design and the basic tools to navigate Illustrator like a mini boss!

Memes and Dreams

Learn Adobe Photoshop and Illustrators through meme’s and making your dreams come true!  Students will learn the about these 2 industry standard digital arts programs through fun assignments such as creating meme’s and designing a future business logo.  This class is geared towards high school aged students and students will learn basic and intermediate aspects of the software and good design techniques.   Get ready to get to turn your imagination and creativity into a reality!

Youtube All-Star

Are you ready to become the Meme Dream Sensation you were born to be?!  You’ll learn how to put your editing skills to the test, how to market and brand your youtube channel and the ins and outs of the algorithms used to promote your channel. Maybe you’ll be the next Gangum Style!!!? We’ll be using a mixture of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and Youtube editing tools for this class.

Beyond STEM

Play & Design Board Games

We live in a golden age of games. New card games, board games and video games are coming out every week and there's no industry that's hotter or that combines art, design, play and logical thinking.  If you join this class, you will have a chance to play some of the most interesting card and board games that have ever been published. Some are old, some are brand new. Even more importantly, you will design, share and play card and board games of your own design. The class ends with a game night in which you invite family and friends to an evening of game play featuring your games!

Vocabulary Builder

Why use a long word when a diminutive one will suffice? Find out why being articulate makes you more than just an ACT/SAT pro. This fun class not only investigates the Latin roots, prefixes/suffixes, and connotations of a plethora of words, but helps increase students' vocabulary a la Balderdash (the board game).

Lunch/Open Lab

Lunch and Open Lab hours are included for students taking the 2 classes before and after this time.(11:00-12:30 and 1:30-3:00)  This is supervised lunch time and extra time for students to finish projects or just to hang out!
